The northern part is slightly hilly around Laufen and Freilassing and the southern part of the region from Bad Reichenhall to Berchtesgaden is situated in the Bavarian Alps. In addition to some middle class enterprises, tourism and agriculture play an important role. In Bad Reichenhall the company "Reber" is domiciled and produces the Mozart balls and many other specialties, which are sold all over the world.

In Berchtesgaden salt mining is important, the extracted brine is boiled in the Bad Reichenhaller Saline together with brine, which is pumped up there. The Bad Reichenhall Salt is known way beyond the borders of Germany as well as the typical Berchtesgaden wood carving art and the woodcock boxes.  Guests experience deeply rooted traditions and ancient customs: palm procession on Palm Sunday, raising the maypole, mountain-, alpine meadow- and traditional costume parties, pilgrimage, cattle drive, Krampus- and Butt Mandl run, Christmas- and New Year's shooting.

Ramsau - Hintersee

Nature lovers from all over the world appreciate the mountain village and many painters have found their inspiration here. The world-famous parish church St. Sebastian adorns many post- and Christmas cards. It's marvelously beautiful in the magic forest and the scenery around Lake Hintersee is very romantic. The second highest mountain of the National Park, the Hochkalter, with his blue ice glaciers reflects in the turquoise blue Hintersee.

The magic forest near the Hintersee with his rocks, wildly fallen over each other, overgrown with thick moss and bizarre trees is one of the 100 most beautiful geological places in Bavaria. 190 km of romantic walking paths and hiking trails await you, as well as climbing facilities, toboggan runs, cross-country skiing tracks, a mountain spa garden with Kneipp facilities and brine refining works.
Kehlsteinhaus - Teehaus - Eagle's Nest

Kehlsteinhaus - tea house - Eagle's Nest

With public buses you make the trip on the 6,5 km long Kehlsteinstraße, with a height difference of 700 m, which provides you a splendid view. From the car park you walk through a gate made of granite blocks into a 124 m long and 3 m high tunnel to reach the Kehlsteinlift, a 124 m high elevator, which ends right in the entrance hall of the Kehlstein House. The ride up with the lift takes only 41 seconds. The elevator is covered with mirrors and brass. In the summer of 1938 after 13 months of construction, it was given to Adolf Hitler as a present for his 50th birthday on April 20 1939. The Carrara Marble for the big fireplace of the main room was donated by Mussolini.

On February 17th  1949,  the Kehlstein House came into the possesion of the Free State of Bavaria. However, it was still seized by the Americans until 1951. In 1952 it was thrown open to the public for general tourism.  Since 1960 the Kehlstein House is managed by the Tourist Association of Berchtesgaden and runned as a mountain inn by private lessees. The Kelhstein House with his meters thick walls provides the visitors an overwhelming view of the Hohe Göll, the Watzmann, the Hochkalter, the Untersberg and the Köningsee (Royal Lake) all the way to Salzburg.

Watzmann

Watzmann

In the Berchtesgaden National Park the trademark of the Berchtesgaden is situated: the 2713 m high Watzmann with his east wall, the highest climbing wall of the Eastern Alps. The experienced mountaineer has a splendid view of the Königssee with St. Bartholomä down below. In the west you see the long Wimbach Valley and the majestic Hochkalter.

From the top you have a magnificent view of Lake Chiemsee all the way to the Großglockner. Countless images show the Watzmann's wife, the kids and the Great Watzmann. The legend tells us that the region was once ruled by the cruel King Waze or Wazemann, who spread fear and terror with his wife and children.  When he trampled a farmer's family with his horse, the farmer's wife laid a curse upon him, that God would change him and his family into stone. After that, the earth bursted open, erupted and fulfilled the curse of the farmer's wife.
